Nonsequitur was founded in 2000 by five Columbia students intent on widening the variety of a cappella groups on campus.  Originally conceived as an all-male group specializing in alternative rock, Nonseq (as it’s popularly known) quickly grew to include all genders and genres, eventually becoming Columbia’s hippest group, with a popular following from College Walk to the Barnard Quad to the halls of the Jewish Theological Seminary.

Our members and alumni come from all four undergraduate schools at the University and from all different singing backgrounds.  Still, we are all united by a shared commitment to making awesome vocal harmonies, executing killer choreographies, and looking generally attractive.

Over the years, Nonseq’s repertoire has widened to include all types of music.  Our songs range from today’s pop to yesterday’s classics, from Britney Spears and Coldplay to Simon & Garfunkel and The Four Seasons, and we’re coming up with new and original arrangements all the time.

In our short existence, we’ve had the privilege to tour in Canada and throughout the East Coast, and we’ve performed with renowned a cappella groups from across the country, including Stanford’s Fleet Street, Tufts’ Jackson Jills, and UC Berkeley’s Men’s Octet.  We’ve also been fortunate enough to grace the stage in an off-Broadway production, Toxic Audio, during the fall of 2004!  In 2009, we won first place in the quarterfinal round for the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella.

Nonsequitur has also enjoyed great success off the stage.  In 2007, we won the Columbia Organizational Achievement Leadership Promise Award (long name, we know) for being the student organization with the best potential for positive impact on Columbia’s campus, becoming the first a cappella group to take home this prize!

Living up to our name, the members of Nonsequitur pride themselves on their spontaneity, verve, and awesome musical abilities.  If you’re interested in what we’re all about, please feel free to explore the rest of the website.
